Cool New Gadgets -Panasonic ToughBook C1 gets upgraded with faster processor, better battery life

That starts off with a new Intel Core i5-2520M vPro processor (2.5GHz, Turbo Boost-able to 3.2GHz), along with a standard 320GB 7,200 rpm hard drive (up from 250GB before), and some improved battery life — Panasonic says you can expect twelve hours from a pair of hot-swappable batteries, or six hours with one. It also says its various improvements contribute to a start-up time that’s 30 percent faster than the previous model, although that will obviously vary in real world use. Somewhat unfortunately, the convertible’s base price tag has also seen a slight upgrade — it’ll now start at $2,599 instead of $2,499 when the new model rolls out next month.

 Panasonic Solutions Company, provider of collaboration, information-sharing and decision-support solutions for government and commercial enterprises, today announced upgrades to the Panasonic Toughbook C1, currently the world’s lightest 12.1″ convertible tablet PC. The new version comes equipped with a 320GB base hard drive, up to 12 hours of battery life, 2GB RAM (expandable to 8GB) and an increased Intel® Core™ i5-2520M vPro™ processor (2.50GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.2GHz). In addition, the Toughbook C1′s start-up time is approximately 30 percent faster1 compared to the previous model. The Toughbook C1 convertible tablet form factor is ideal for road warriors and mobile workers in a variety of environments including healthcare, education and field sales.

The upgraded Toughbook C1 maintains its embedded wireless connectivity, including Bluetooth® v2.1 and optional Qualcomm’s Gobi™2000 3G mobile broadband technology. The device is certified on the AT&T and other major 3G networks, allowing workers to stay connected virtually all of the time. Additionally, the Toughbook C1 has Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6205 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, offering improved connectivity options for mobile workers.

At 3.28 lbs, the lightweight Toughbook C1 with the triple-hinge design is created for a highly mobile workforce. The laptop is able to withstand drops from approximately 30″ and comes with a battery life of twelve hours (with optional second battery) – enabled by a hot-swappable twin battery design. The ‘hand-free’ ergonomic “strap and dome” cradle is designed for customer comfort and long-term use. The Toughbook C1 also has a spill-resistant keyboard, which protects against liquid spills of about 6 ounces. The device’s 12.1″ widescreen WXGA 1280 x 800 display is available with a choice of multi touch and digitizer screen or gloved multi touch screen and an anti-glare screen treatment.

Funspygadgets - Sony VAIO Z21 Series mentioned on various European sites, isn’t actually for sale yet

at least, it lives on — a quartet of Z21 series laptops have surfaced on various e-tailers as the possible successor to last year’s Z11. So far, we’re seeing a pair of configurations with a Core i5-2410M processor and 128GB of solid-state storage and two more with a Core i7-2620M CPU and 256GB in storage. Judging by this sample, at least, 1600 x 900 resolution is standard, as is a backlit keyboard, 3G SIM card slot, fingerprint reader, 3D output, and an HD webcam with Sony’s Exmor imaging technology. Alas, the available specs suggest Thunderbolt’s a no-show, though rumor has it Sony’s implementation of Intel’s Light Peak technology will use USB connectors, of which this has three. Here’s to wishful thinking, right?

The peculiar thing is, you can’t actually buy it yet. F2F lists staggering prices ranging from €1,809 ($2,642) to €2,839 ($4,146), though it’s not, in fact, available. Meanwhile, search results turn up mentions on staticICE UK and Belgium’s Execute, but they’ve been scrubbed from the actual pages. So, it looks like it’s up to Sony to announce this already — and dish up some pictures while it’s at it.

Gigabyte M2432 laptop with GeForce GT 440 graphics card dock hands-on

Let’s focus on the actual machine first: here we have a Core i5-2410M (2.3GHz to 2.9GHz) rig packing a 14-inch 1,366 x 768 LCD, Intel HD Graphics 3000, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, 500GB 7200rpm hard drive, and a DVD burner that can be swapped with a secondary battery. You’ll also find 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0, HDMI-out, VGA-out, 1.3 megapixel webcam, an eSATA/USB 2.0 combo port, and two USB 3.0 ports on this Windows 7 Home Premium laptop. All of this weigh 1.8kg (3.97lbs).

There’s a bit of a surprise inside the expansion dock: by laying the M2432 on top of it, not only are you adding six extra USB 2.0 ports plus DVI-out and another HDMI-out, but you’re also kicking up its graphics power with the built-in desktop-class NVIDIA GeForce GT 440 with 1GB video RAM. So essentially, the dock doubles as an external graphics card. No word on prices or availability just yet, so stay tuned.

The Toshiba Tecra R840 is currently Toshiba’s thinnest 14″ laptop to date. It weighs only around 4.2 pounds and measures only about an inch thin when closed. But despite its thin profile, it is designed to be more robust by integrating a unique honeycomb structure for a fiberglass reinforced chassis to increase durability and rigidity along with some shock absorbing features.

The thin form factor of the Toshiba Tecra R840 may not easily show the computing power that it houses. Inside this laptop houses the 2nd generation Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 processors. It can also come with AMD graphics with a dedicated 1GB memory for a better visual experience. Other features include USB 3.0 slots for faster transfer speeds for external devices and a power saving Eco Utility feature. The Toshiba Tecra R840 Laptop is now available at Toshiba and starts at US$899 for the base unit.
